#20 – YouTube – I think one must live under a rock to NOT know what YouTube is. And even though YouTube is everywhere you look, I’m not really that into it. I don’t get how some people sit and watch video after video after video. Although I do occasionally enjoy a cute animal video or check to see if my favorite bands have any new videos, I feel like I don’t have time to wade through all of the garbage and nonsense on YouTube. I have never had the opportunity to use YouTube in my classroom because the district blocks it, so even if there are educationally appropriate videos that would my lessons, I can’t use them.
#21 – Podcasts – I don’t have much experience with Podcasts, although I did use iUniversity while teaching my poetry unit this year. I found really great readers for Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee” and Alfred Noye’s “The Highwayman”. My students LOVED listening to the poems from my iPod! It makes such a difference for seventh graders to hear a poem read by a “professional” rather than a fellow seventh grader who reads in a very monotone voice while stumbling over difficult words. Listening to the podcast reading of the poems really brought them to life for my students. I looked through Podcast.com and while they seem to have a nice variety of Podcasts, I just don’t have a desire or interest to sit and listen to one at my computer. I guess I feel like I don’t have the extra time to sit at my computer and listen to a podcast.
#22 – eBooks and Audio eBooks – I checked out the Gutenberg Project and the World eBook Fair. While both sites appear to have extensive lists of books, I had a hard time finding anything current or new (which is what I want to listen to) but I can see how these sites could be very helpful in the school library or classroom. Many of the books I found were academic, “classic” novels that I could use in my English classes. However, for the new, current books I want to listen to, I guess I will have to stick with iTunes for now.
#23 – Summarize your thoughts about this program – So far I am a little startled about how much I thought I knew, but really don't. This program has reminded me that there is SO MUCH on the Internet and I have to learn how to properly make my way through all of the information.
