23T - Week 3 - Flickr

Flickr is an online photo management and photo sharing site. On Flickr you can upload, organize, and share your photos. When you upload photos, you can also add tags, create "batches", and add your photos to certain groups. I recently found an interesting group called, I Ate This. I found this group really interesting because I love to look at pictures of food and my husband loves to take pictures of his food.

About three years ago, I was really into Flickr. I loved uploading, tagging, and sharing my photos, but my interest has since waned. I didn't want to pay the subscription fee for a "Pro" account, so once I uploaded the maximum of 200 photos for a free account, I moved my photos elsewhere. I do sometimes still browse Flickr to view other people's photos, many of which are very impressive.

In regards to using Flickr in a library, I can see it as a good "marketing tool." The library could sign up for a free account, add pictures of various library activities throughout the year, and then have a slide show playing during Open House. Many parents, students, and administrators might be astonished to see how much activity goes on in the library throughout the year! I found another group, Libraries and Librarians that shares photos of libraries from around the world. It was interesting to browse through the photos and gave me new ideas on possible ways to set up and structure my future library. I could also take pictures of the covers of new books in the library and post these for students to view on the library web page.
